With a passion for the common good

For over a century, the foundation Possehl-Stiftung has been located in the Beckergrube in Lübeck's historic old town, alongside L. Possehl & Co. mbH, which was established in 1847. The foundation is dedicated to promoting “all that is good and beautiful” in Lübeck by preserving the city's charming character, supporting youth initiatives, fostering the arts and sciences, and alleviating the hardships faced by those in need.

„My greatest wish is that the fruits of my life's work may benefit my beloved hometown, the free and Hanseatic city of Lübeck.“

Emil Possehl

The Possehl Foundation: An overview

On May 17, 1919, the Possehl Foundation became legally binding by Senate decree. Emil Possehl himself chose the Possehl Foundation as the sole owner of the (Possehl) Group. This enabled the company to be managed on a long-term basis. As a result, the Group of companies and the foundation have been closely linked for more than 100 years. The geographical proximity also contributes to this: The headquarters of the company and the foundation have been located in Beckergrube in Lübeck from the very beginning. However, the decisive factor is the joint continuation of Emil Possehl's entrepreneurial thinking and actions. He always preferred to invest his money in entrepreneurial activities. The Group of companies therefore forms the basis of the Possehl Foundation. In order for the Possehl Foundation to be able to support charitable projects reliably and sustainably, it is essential that the Group generates a steady dividend, even in times of economic downturn. The Possehl Group and the foundation Possehl-Stiftung are equally focused on long-term goals in their actions.

Honorary board of directors from various professional groups

Today, the foundation's Board of Directors consists of 15 to 18 people. Emil Possehl had stipulated that it should be made up of "members of the Senate, the authorities, the business community, the clergy, teachers, the legal profession and other liberal professions". Even today, representatives of the professions named by Emil Possehl work on the foundation's board on a honorary basis. The Board Members are involved in numerous working groups, juries and visits to the sponsored institutions.
